I found an interesting problem in how Bb and Excel alphabetize. In my list of students in Excel Obrien (correct spelling of the name) appears before O’Connell. They appear in the reverse order in Bb resulting in the students getting each others grades. A word to the wise…

Thanks for pointing that out! There are also sorting differences between Bb and SOLAR.
We recommend that instructors create the framework for the gradebook at the start of the semester, then export their gradebook from Blackboard into Excel. This will retain the correct (by Bb’s standards) alphabetization.
To export your gradebook from Blackboard:
1. Go to the Control Panel in your course.
2. Select Gradebook.
3. Select the Download Grades button from the toolbar near the top of the page.
4. Select Tab, then click Submit.
5. Click the Download button and save the Gradebook to your Desktop, or some other location that’s easy for you to remember.
6. Open the file on your computer. It is named gb_export.xls.
7. Enter grades accordingly.
To upload your updated gradebook back into Blackboard:
1. Go to the Control Panel in your course.
2. Select Gradebook.
3. Select the Upload Grades button from the toolbar near the top of the page.
4. Click Browse and find the Excel file on your computer, then click Open.
5. Click Submit.
You can also add columns in Excel and pick and choose them to add to the Gradebook when you upload, if you choose to do it that.
If you have any questions, feel free to email us at blackboard@stonybrook.edu!
